Description
G6PD Test
The G6PD (Glucose-6-Phosphate Dehydrogenase) Test measures the level of the G6PD enzyme in the blood. This enzyme helps red blood cells function normally. A deficiency can cause red blood cells to break down prematurely (hemolysis), leading to anemia, especially after certain infections, foods (like fava beans), or medications.
Why This Test is Done:
-
Diagnose G6PD deficiency
-
Investigate unexplained anemia or jaundice
-
Determine risk before prescribing certain medicines
-
Screen newborns in some cases
How It Works:
A blood sample is analyzed to measure G6PD enzyme activity. Low levels indicate a deficiency.
Sample Requirement: Blood sample
Reporting Time: Same day or next day
No special preparation is required.
