Description
HBsAg (Hepatitis B Surface Antigen) Test
The HBsAg Test is a blood test used to detect the presence of Hepatitis B surface antigen, a protein found on the surface of the Hepatitis B virus (HBV). A positive result indicates an active Hepatitis B infection, which may be acute or chronic.
Why This Test is Done:
-
Screen for Hepatitis B infection
-
Diagnose the cause of liver inflammation or abnormal liver function tests
-
Identify carriers of the Hepatitis B virus
-
Test pregnant women to prevent mother-to-child transmission
-
Monitor patients undergoing Hepatitis B treatment
How It Works:
A blood sample is collected and tested for the HBsAg protein. If the antigen is detected, additional tests may be required to determine the stage and severity of the infection.
Sample Requirement: Blood sample
Reporting Time: Same day
Early detection helps in timely treatment and in preventing the spread of the infection.
