Description
VDRL (Venereal Disease Research Laboratory) Test
The VDRL Test is a blood test used to screen for syphilis, a sexually transmitted infection caused by the bacterium Treponema pallidum. It detects antibodies produced in response to the infection.
Why This Test is Done:
-
Screen for syphilis in individuals at risk
-
Diagnose syphilis in patients with symptoms like sores, rashes, or neurological issues
-
Monitor treatment effectiveness in diagnosed cases
How It Works:
A blood sample is collected and tested for antibodies. The VDRL test can also be performed on cerebrospinal fluid (CSF) to detect syphilis affecting the nervous system.
Sample Requirement: Blood sample (or CSF if required)
Reporting Time: Same day
Positive results may need confirmation with more specific tests like the TPHA test.
