Description
Widal Test
The Widal Test is a blood test used to help diagnose typhoid and paratyphoid fever, caused by Salmonella typhi and Salmonella paratyphi bacteria. It detects specific antibodies (O and H) that the body produces in response to these infections.
Why This Test is Done:
-
Diagnose typhoid or paratyphoid fever in patients with prolonged fever, abdominal pain, or other suggestive symptoms
-
Support diagnosis in areas where typhoid is common
-
Monitor antibody levels during treatment
How It Works:
A blood sample is collected and mixed with antigens to detect the presence and level (titer) of antibodies against Salmonella bacteria. Higher antibody titers may indicate an active or recent infection.
Sample Requirement: Blood sample
Reporting Time: Same day
Note: Results should be interpreted alongside clinical symptoms and other diagnostic tests for accuracy.
